The Next Frontier: The AI Opportunity Franchise Brands Are Overlooking

The Next Frontier explores how emerging technology and AI are reshaping franchising in real time. Pulled from our monthly insider newsletter, Franchise Unfiltered, this section focuses on practical applications, not hype, showing how forward-thinking franchise systems are using tech to remove friction, scale operations, and build durable competitive advantage.

This month, I have one challenge and one contrarian observation. Both are designed for the human side of the AI conversation because while everyone is talking about new tools, I think we’re spending far less time talking about how organizations will actually use them.

The Challenge

  • Search Lovable or Cursor online.

  • Create a free account.

  • Type into the box something you would like it to build for your business.

  • Then email me a screenshot of what you built and tell me why.

That’s it.

My guess is that 95% of the people who dump on AI tools have never even done the exercise above.

Yes, most organizations will still need developers to properly bring these projects to life. But that’s not really the point. The point is that you can start building today. Even if you’re simply creating a mockup to hand off to an AI-native developer, you’re moving dramatically faster than you could have a year ago.

The barrier to building software has dropped. You no longer need months of planning or massive budgets just to validate an idea. You can test concepts, explore workflows, and prototype solutions before writing a single line of production code.

That’s a pretty exciting place to be.

It’s also why I’m firing the Modrn Business Podcast back up next month, this time with video instead of just audio. I want to showcase what franchise brands are actually building with these amazing tools and highlight the people who are experimenting while the rest of the market is still watching from the sidelines.

The Observation

The area organizations are sleeping on with regard to AI is the Semantic Layer.

Think about where your organization’s knowledge actually lives.

  • Your work chats (Slack).

  • Your meetings (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, even in-person conversations).

  • What your team is working on every day, whether that’s initiatives, projects, quarterly priorities, “rocks,” or tasks.

All of that context exists somewhere.

The problem is that very little of it becomes accessible after the conversation ends.

Franchise networks introduce another layer of complexity because the communication and collaboration tools most enterprises rely on are often:

  • Too expensive

  • Siloed

  • Not purpose-built for franchise dynamics

But franchising has always been a business model built on the power of leveraging a growing network of operators, not just as sales and fulfillment arms, but as collaborators who continuously share ideas and solve problems together.

So why do we accept losing the context behind those conversations?

What would that human data surface if you could unlock it?

What if you woke up every morning with a pulse on your organization, surfacing the insights, discussions, and progress happening across your entire network?

Imagine breaking down the silos between departments, roles, franchisees, and stakeholders. Imagine giving every team the context they need to make better decisions without adding another meeting to the calendar.

I think that’s one of the biggest opportunities AI creates over the next several years.

Looking Ahead

The FSN team recently became founding partners of a new organization that’s building exactly this for franchising.

We’re currently accepting approximately one franchise brand per week into a private beta.

The model is simple:

  • No contract

  • Usage-based pricing

  • Product-led growth

  • Roughly one-third the cost of many traditional collaboration platforms

Most importantly, it was built from the ground up for franchising.

I think we’re still in the very early innings of what AI will become inside franchise organizations. While everyone is racing to build the next tool, I’m far more interested in helping organizations unlock the knowledge they already have. My guess is that’s where some of the biggest breakthroughs are going to come from.
