The Next Frontier: Why AI Could Fuel the Next Wave of Franchise Ownership
The Next Frontier explores how emerging technology and AI are reshaping franchising in real time. Pulled from our monthly insider newsletter, Franchise Unfiltered, this section focuses on practical applications, not hype, showing how forward-thinking franchise systems are using tech to remove friction, scale operations, and build durable competitive advantage.
Traditional finance, professional services, and information jobs have been contracting for about 31 straight months.
That shift will continue to accelerate, and I believe it could mean great things for franchise development because a lot of this talent is going to start looking at ownership opportunities. It follows pretty basic logic that uncertainty breeds exploration of options, and right now, people are nervous. They want a path they can control, they want to own something, and they’re increasingly questioning what their career might look like five or ten years from now.
The almost magical capabilities of AI tools are only part of what is fueling this interest. My prediction is that AI adoption will continue to accelerate this ownership exploration trend significantly.
The question for franchise brands is: Are you ready to take advantage?
I’ve Been Watching This Trend for Years
I went on record on stage in front of a room of 800 franchise professionals at Springboard in a 2023 keynote, and again in my 2024 and 2025 welcome remarks. I said the chart above was bound to happen, and it did.
More importantly, I said I believe the number of franchise candidates we see over the next five-plus years should at least double, and that it’s entirely possible we see an order-of-magnitude jump over the next decade.
People thought I was a little nuts back then. Spoiler: I am a bit nuts, but I have been historically correct in my thesis.
Here we are in 2026. It is happening, and I believe it has only just begun.
Why Franchising Is Well Positioned for This Moment
Franchising as a path to ownership is not for everyone, nor should it be. But for someone coming out of a traditional corporate career and exploring business ownership for the first time, the model solves a lot of the challenges that make entrepreneurship intimidating.
With franchising, there is:
A lower “invention tax”
Faster speed to market
Playbooks to follow
An established brand to leverage
A solid technology stack, without needing to reinvent the wheel or learn how to build AI agents yourself
Multi-unit expansion opportunities for different levels of ambition
A network of fellow operators to befriend and learn from
Those advantages have always mattered. I believe they become even more valuable in an environment where technology is moving faster than most individual business owners can reasonably keep up with.
Someone leaving finance, consulting, tech, or another professional field may have the leadership skills, business acumen, and capital required to become an excellent operator. What they may not want is the responsibility of inventing an entire business model, building a brand, selecting every piece of technology, creating operating procedures, and constantly figuring out what the latest wave of AI means for their company.
A strong franchise system gives them another option.
Our Country Needs More Paths to Ownership
Our country needs franchising. People need a way to build something for themselves without having to build it entirely by themselves. They need paths to business ownership that don’t require them to independently solve every operational, marketing, technological, and strategic challenge that comes with starting from zero.
That becomes especially important as AI accelerates change across the workforce. If more talented professionals begin questioning the long-term security or desirability of traditional employment, franchising has an opportunity to introduce them to a different path.
But that opportunity comes with a pretty tall task for franchisors.
If candidate volume grows the way I believe it will, brands need to make sure their franchise development, operations, marketing, technology, and support systems are ready for it. More people exploring ownership doesn’t automatically mean more successful franchisees. The brands that benefit most will be the ones prepared to educate these candidates, help them understand what ownership actually requires, and give them the infrastructure to succeed once they join the system.
Is Your Franchise Brand Ready?
The conversation around AI and franchising tends to focus on the technology itself. I think the bigger story may ultimately be what that technology does to the workforce and how people think about their careers.
AI will change jobs. It will change companies. And I believe it will push a meaningful number of talented people to start asking a question they may never have seriously considered before:
What if I owned the business instead?
For franchising, that could create one of the biggest franchise development opportunities we’ve seen in a long time.
The question now is whether franchise brands are ready for it.
